Andy Cohen opened his SiriusXM show with a tone listeners don’t often hear from him. No pop culture recap. No playful banter. Just heartbreak.
Addressing the passing of Mary Cosby’s son, Robert Jr., the longtime Bravo host spoke carefully and emotionally about the loss, making it clear this was not just another headline.
“We’re so sad to read the news about Mary Cosby’s son, Robert and I just, I can’t think of anything worse than losing a child and in this way,” Andy said. “John, you and I have talked so much on this show about addiction and the heartbreak that is associated and I have so much love for Mary and I spoke to her on Tuesday for a while, and you know, it’s just, I think it’s every parent’s worst nightmare.”
For viewers of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, Mary’s conversations with her son about his struggles were some of the most vulnerable scenes ever shown on the franchise. There was no glamour in those moments. Just a mother trying to reach her child.
Andy reflected on that, noting how much respect he had for the way Mary handled those discussions on camera.
“I want to say we, you and I talked about this too, just about how much respect we had for the way that she spoke to Robert when we saw them talking about this on air and what I really admired was that she kind of met him where he was in a way, and she was kind of gently steering him or guiding him.”
His co-host John Hill responded with a phrase that summed up what many viewers saw: “Loving him without judgment.”
Andy agreed and referenced last season’s reunion, when Robert Jr. was in jail and Mary had hoped the experience would change his trajectory.
“Yes, and last season, as you know, when we shot the reunion, he was in jail and she was really hoping that he would be scared straight and I guess, you know, I guess that didn’t happen.”
The conversation then shifted to the painful reality surrounding addiction and the weight families often carry in its aftermath. Andy voiced what so many parents might feel in similar circumstances.
“I really just feel like everyone around that person is probably second guessing their own actions and, you know, what more could they have done.”
John, who has been open about his own sobriety journey, answered candidly.
“That’s a natural thing, but I think it’s a, you have to just focus on, he was so lucky to have a mother like Mary. I’ll never forget that conversation they had, which I think helped a lot of parents who may have a child who goes through the same thing. They’ll hopefully remember how brilliantly she showed up for him and it’s tough to talk about because it is a real risk when you have someone who’s so seriously in addiction. It’s a risk that they may not make it right and you, it’s always in the back of your mind.”
He continued, speaking to the seriousness of addiction. “I’ve known a lot of people since I started to try to get sober that have passed, and it’s, wow. It’s real and it’s dangerous and you are rooting people on, but it’s like, it always is, it is that serious. It is a life and death matter.”
Andy added something he says he has learned through John’s experience: “you just, you cannot help people who don’t want the help or don’t want it for themselves.”
John offered nuance. “Yeah, that is true, but I also think that there are people who do want to help themselves, but it is the hardest thing to do… I wanted to for years, but I didn’t know how, and so that’s why people like Mary are so important because you have to adapt. You know, ‘I’m here when you need me. I’m here when you need help,’ and you don’t want to pressure them. You don’t wanna push them, but you also, you kind of do. I think tough love is important.”
He acknowledged there is no easy takeaway. “There no silver lining to any of it. The only thing is just gratitude for how lucky he was to have a mother like Mary and hopefully the way she showed up will help other people.”
As the segment came to a close, Andy spoke about faith and the comfort it can bring in moments of loss.
“I know through Mary’s faith that she, that’s there’s a belief that, you know, in the Jewish religion, it’s like when you pass, you just pass, and one of the things that I am inspired by in other religions is the idea that when you pass, you go to another life that is better than this.”
John added, “She’ll see him in the afterlife. I’m sure she’s, that’s the hope. That’s the grace. That’s the belief. They’ll be reunited at some point.”
Andy ended simply: “Anyway, all our love, we are sending all our love to Mary and Robert.”
John echoed the sentiment: “We love you, Mary.”
“Yeah,” Andy said. “We love you so much.”
