The former Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star revealed that she recently ended up in the emergency room after waking up with a severe reaction that left her body covered in painful sores. Despite the ordeal, Mellencamp still managed to make it to her daughter Dove’s birthday celebration shortly after being discharged.

Mellencamp shared details of the incident during the March 3 episode of her podcast with Tamra Judge, Two T’s In A Pod.

“I thought I had the flu. And then I woke up one day and my whole body was just covered in, like, this terrible rash — like, you can’t even say it’s a rash because it’s almost like sores all over my entire body,” she said.

The symptoms quickly escalated beyond what she initially expected.

According to Mellencamp, the sores were extremely painful and intense.

“They hurt and burned,” she explained.

After initially visiting urgent care, doctors advised her to go straight to the emergency room, where physicians determined that she had developed Stevens-Johnson syndrome — a rare and serious reaction often triggered by medication.

Mellencamp said the condition caused severe symptoms throughout her body.

She revealed she had blisters “in my mouth, around my eyes, and all over my body,” and at one point she was unable to swallow.

Doctors admitted her to the hospital and began treatment with steroid injections and antibiotics.

“The reason they were like, ‘You have to stay in [the hospital],’ is because they can start to get better and then shift right back up,” Mellencamp explained.

Fortunately, she was released in time to attend an important moment for her family — her daughter Dove’s birthday party.

Sharing a photo of the six-year-old, whom she shares with estranged husband Edwin Arroyave, Mellencamp wrote, “So happy I am out of the hospital in time for Dove’s party.”

She added, “Last year I couldn’t [make it to her party] and it broke my heart.”

The milestone carried extra meaning for Mellencamp, who missed the previous birthday celebration while recovering from emergency brain surgery in February 2025 to remove cancerous tumors.

Her health struggles began after melanoma she was diagnosed with in 2022 metastasized to her brain. In October, Mellencamp announced that the cancer was currently undetectable.

However, she recently clarified that her battle isn’t over.

“There’s still no trace of cancer. But I’m still considered stage four and I’m still on immunotherapy, so essentially nothing’s changed other than I still don’t feel great,” she shared on a January episode of Two T’s In A Pod.

“I [hoped] that I would be feeling better by now, but I really don’t,” she added.

Despite the ongoing challenges, Mellencamp continues to share updates about her health journey with fans while focusing on time with her children during recovery.
