Melissa Gorga Says RHONJ Would Struggle Without The Original Cast As Dolores Catania Teases A “Sincere Reconciliation” With Teresa Giudice

Melissa Gorga is defending Bravo’s decision to keep familiar faces on The Real Housewives of New Jersey, admitting that she believes the franchise would have a difficult time winning over viewers without its longtime cast members.

As RHONJ prepares to return in December with a significantly revamped cast, Melissa and Dolores Catania are opening up about why the network’s decision to bring back Teresa Giudice, Melissa and Dolores alongside six new faces was the right move.

Speaking with TV Insider at Bravo Fan Fest 2026 in Charleston, South Carolina, on October 24, Melissa suggested that a complete reboot would have been a difficult sell for longtime viewers.

“It was a very smart idea,” Melissa said of Bravo’s decision to retain some of the show’s established stars.

The RHONJ veteran pointed out that audiences have spent years following the complicated relationships within the Gorga and Giudice families, making their personal history an important part of the franchise.

“It’s so hard to get to know a whole new cast,” Melissa explained.

“Jersey is just so sold in our family, it would be really hard to get people to love it without us. So I’m happy to be doing it this way.”

Melissa’s comments come after RHONJ was placed on an extended hiatus following Season 14, which ended in August 2024.

The season was dominated by the ongoing feud between Teresa and Melissa, with the cast becoming so divided that the women were unable to come together for a traditional reunion.

Instead, Bravo filmed separate viewing events with different groups of cast members, further highlighting how fractured the relationships had become.

Following the season, Andy Cohen acknowledged that the franchise needed a significant change before filming could resume.

In March 2026, Bravo officially confirmed that Teresa, Melissa and Dolores would return for Season 15, leaving several other longtime Housewives off the new cast.

The upcoming season will introduce five new full-time Housewives: Malvina Blloshmi, Xio Cammarota, Juliette Collazo, Deeba Patel and Natia Rufolo. Vanessa Barerra will also join as a friend of the cast.

While Melissa believes keeping the familiar faces was essential, Dolores admitted she has been impressed by the newcomers and their willingness to expose their personal lives to a national audience.

“I love the new girls,” Dolores told TV Insider.

She expressed respect for the women taking on the challenges that come with joining an established reality television franchise, but also warned that they might not fully understand what awaits them.

Dolores suggested that the newcomers could be in for a surprise once they experience the intensity of the RHONJ fan base firsthand.

“I don’t know that they’re very well aware of the wrath of Bravo fans and what it’s like to live that,” she said.

However, she believes the women will be able to handle the attention as long as they remain true to themselves and understand what they signed up for.

Andy Cohen has also expressed optimism about the upcoming season, describing the new cast dynamic as “very fresh, but also what we love.”

But beyond the new Housewives, one of the biggest changes viewers will see is the relationship between Teresa and Melissa.

After years of explosive family arguments and a lengthy estrangement, the sisters-in-law reconciled in September 2025.

Teresa previously revealed that she was the one who reached out to her brother, Joe Gorga, after reflecting on their family relationship.

The siblings eventually reunited privately at the cemetery where their late parents are buried.

Melissa later explained that Joe was initially hesitant about reconnecting with his sister because their previous attempts at reconciliation had ended badly.

However, following their emotional meeting, Joe returned home noticeably happier, with Melissa describing him as looking like a little boy who had gotten his older sister back.

Teresa, Joe, Melissa and Louie Ruelas subsequently spent time together discussing their past disagreements and agreeing to move forward.

Now, Melissa says the reconciliation has changed her perspective on what matters most.

“We’re just realizing as we get older that life is short and to fight less over the silly things,” she told TV Insider.

Dolores, who has spent years caught between Teresa and Melissa’s disagreements, admitted she is relieved that the family has finally reached a better place.

“I love that we’re all together. I love that there’s no animosity,” Dolores shared.

She also emphasized that viewers should expect to see a very different relationship between the sisters-in-law when the show returns.

“It’s not a tumultuous relationship. I think you’re going to see a sincere reconciliation with the sister and sister-in-law next season.”

For Dolores, the shift is especially meaningful after years of attempting to maintain friendships on both sides of the family feud.

Throughout RHONJ, Dolores frequently found herself in the middle of disagreements between Teresa and Melissa, often avoiding taking sides in an effort to preserve her relationships with both women.

But with the family now on better terms, Dolores appears optimistic that viewers will finally see a less divided group.

That doesn’t mean Season 15 will be without drama.

Dolores recently teased that the newcomers have their own conflicts and aren’t afraid to challenge one another.

She also revealed that Teresa and Melissa still experience occasional disagreements, although their interactions are far different from the bitter arguments that previously dominated the series.

The new season will mark the first time viewers see Teresa and Melissa filming together since repairing their relationship, providing a fresh dynamic for a franchise that had become heavily centered on their estrangement.

And while some former Housewives will not be returning, Melissa believes Bravo’s decision to combine familiar relationships with new personalities gives the show the best opportunity to reconnect with viewers.

As for whether Melissa and Dolores had any doubts about returning after the lengthy hiatus, both women made it clear that they were more than ready.

“Never will be,” Dolores said when asked whether she had hesitations.

“This is a gift. Every day is a gift. Never take it for granted.”

Melissa, meanwhile, had a much more lighthearted explanation for her excitement.

“I was just bored waiting around for it to come back!” she joked.

With RHONJ set to return in December, fans will finally see whether the combination of longtime Housewives, fresh faces and a repaired family relationship can bring the franchise into a new era.
