The Summer House star and Love Island USA: Aftersun cohost took to Threads on Saturday, June 27, after some viewers accused her of not showing enough empathy or understanding toward conversations involving race and colorism on reality TV.

Ciara made it clear that she felt the backlash was unfair, especially because viewers only see a small portion of what is actually discussed during filming.

“You guys need to fucking relax,” Ciara wrote.

She explained that Aftersun films for hours, but not everything makes it into the final episode.

“We film for 6 hours. Perspectives get left on the cutting room floor. I could psychoanalyze all of LI for hours and write a dissertation on black people/colorism on reality TV.”

Ciara then pushed back against the idea that she does not understand or care about the perspective of people of color.

“Don’t talk to me about how I ‘fail’ to see any person of color’s perspective or how I need more ‘empathy.’ I’ve quite literally lived it.”

The comments come as Love Island USA fans continue to dissect every moment from the season, including conversations around race, colorism, treatment of Black women and how contestants are discussed both on the show and online.

Ciara has been open in the past about her own experiences as a Black woman on reality TV. Most recently, she spoke candidly about interracial friendships and feeling failed by white women in friendships after her fallout with Amanda Batula on Summer House.

That is why Ciara appeared especially frustrated by viewers suggesting she lacks empathy or does not understand the issue.

Her point seems to be that there is a much bigger conversation to be had, but an edited aftershow does not always show every perspective or every nuance that was discussed during filming.

While she did not fully detail which specific Love Island USA: Aftersun moment sparked the criticism, she made it clear that she is not accepting the narrative that she failed to understand the conversation.
