Garcelle Beauvais is finally opening up about what pushed her to walk away from The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, and it turns out her decision had everything to do with protecting her peace.
The actress and reality star, 59, reflected on her Bravo exit while speaking at the People Inc. Black Affinity Group’s Legacy Chat series in New York City on May 7, where she admitted that although RHOBH changed her life in many ways, the show eventually stopped feeling right for her.
Garcelle joined The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills during Season 10 and made history as the first Black cast member on the franchise. At the time, she knew the show was popular, but she had no idea just how much attention her casting would bring.
“First of all, when I joined that show,” Beauvais told moderator Kareema Bee with a laugh, “I mean, obviously I knew the show and I had friends on the show, and I knew it was popular. I had no idea that me being announced was going to go, like, crazy viral.”
Beauvais said she found out she was trending online from a friend, but at the time, she was completely unaware of the internet frenzy surrounding her Bravo debut.
“A friend of mine, Natalie, texted me and she’s like, ‘You’re trending on Twitter,’ ” Garcelle recalled. “And I was like, ‘Why? I’m making pork chops for the boys.’ I didn’t understand what was happening.”
Garcelle has been open over the years about what joining RHOBH meant for her career. The show introduced her to a new audience and gave fans a different side of her outside of acting. But despite the visibility and opportunities, Garcelle said she knew when it was time to leave.
“It gave me a new audience that I didn’t have before,” Garcelle said. “It gave me a different, in terms of brand recognition and all that, but knowing when to leave, my spirit was not … My spirit was no longer there. I couldn’t do it anymore. I just couldn’t do it.”
According to Garcelle, the major turning point came while filming the reunion.
“When I sat on that reunion stage and looked around, I felt like I didn’t have any friends,” Garcelle admitted. “And if the show is based on friendships, I didn’t have any friends on that show anymore.”
She continued, “And so it just didn’t feel right for me and my spirit just didn’t feel like that’s where I needed to be.”
Garcelle’s exit came after several seasons of tension within the Beverly Hills group. During her time on the show, fans watched her navigate complicated friendships, loyalty issues, group pile ons, and difficult conversations with her castmates.
While Garcelle had moments of support on the show, her comments make it clear that by the end, she felt isolated from the group.
Elsewhere in the conversation, Garcelle spoke about the difficulty of walking away from a job, especially one that provided financial stability and major exposure.
“It was hard because, again, I’m an immigrant. You don’t leave jobs,” Garcelle said. “You don’t leave jobs that are paying you, right? So that wasn’t an easy decision.”
Still, Garcelle said she ultimately had to choose herself.
“Once again, I had to choose me,” Garcelle explained. “I chose me in the marriage when I walked away. I chose me here.”
The Survival of the Thickest actress also shared advice for women who may feel stuck in unhealthy environments, whether in their careers, relationships, or personal lives.
“You gotta do like the movie and get out,” Garcelle joked. “Because life is too short. This is our one time. There’s no do-overs. This is not a rehearsal.”
She continued, “Protect it. Keep the joys that you wanna keep. Take out the negativity that you don’t want in your life.”
Garcelle clarified that she is not encouraging people to quit their jobs without a plan, but she does want women to feel empowered to leave situations that no longer serve them.
“We don’t have to take it anymore,” Garcelle said. “Especially women, we’re independent, we make our own money … we can walk away.”
“And I always feel like God will provide if you take that leap of faith,” she added.
Garcelle’s time on RHOBH may have brought her a bigger audience, but her latest comments make it clear that fame and exposure were not enough to keep her in a space where she no longer felt supported.
And for Garcelle, walking away was not about giving up. It was about choosing herself.
