Bravo’s Top Executive Opens Up On Why Network Has A High Rate Casting Criminals and What Gets a Housewife Fired

by Roxanne June 13, 2025
written by Roxanne

As the chair of NBCUniversal’s Entertainment Networks, Bravo’s top executive Frances Berwick oversees some of the most recognizable unscripted content in pop culture—including The Real Housewives, a franchise that has redefined reality television. But the empire wasn’t built on a master plan. In this exclusive interview with Fast Company, Berwick breaks down how a one-off show about Orange County socialites unexpectedly snowballed into a global phenomenon, what it really takes to cast a compelling ensemble, and why even the most dramatic storylines have limits.

Despite its global recognition today, The Real Housewives wasn’t launched with franchising in mind. “It happened by accident,” Berwick admits. The franchise began with The Real Housewives of Orange County, but the expansion came unexpectedly during development of another show. “We were developing a show called Manhattan Moms… during production we saw how successful Orange County was.”

The team wrestled with rebranding the New York series under the Housewives umbrella. “We had a whole internal debate about whether it was going to tarnish Orange County if we named Manhattan Moms Real Housewives of New York instead,” she recalls. Even cast members needed convincing. “We then had to persuade some of the cast that it was okay to be called Real Housewives because they weren’t all married.”

Soon after came Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Atlanta, and the rest is television history. “It all started with organic groups of friends,” says Berwick. “It became franchised in a small period of time because we were doing all this casting around female ensembles.”

Why You’ll Never See Filming During a Season’s Airing

One of Bravo’s more strategic production decisions is knowing when not to film.

“We now know we can’t tape an ongoing show while the current cycle is on the air,” Berwick explains. “We have tried that and it gets confusing because the cast members start reacting to things that they see [online] and it becomes very meta. Often that can be a very tedious storyline.”

In other words, when the drama starts reacting to itself in real time, it loses its edge.

Keeping the Franchise Fresh

After years on air, many reality shows lose steam—but Berwick says Bravo has learned how to avoid franchise fatigue. “There are lessons that we’ve learned from the past where [we did] too much. Two or three years ago, we had five different Below Deck casts. We’ve scaled that back to three at any one time. That’s the right number.”

The trick with Housewives, though, lies in the casting. “That’s the beauty of a show like Real Housewives—we can keep refreshing the cast. In some cases we’ll replace the whole cast, but that’s riskier.”

Bravo has also evolved in how it tells stories. “You’ll notice at some point we started doing much more flashbacks and flash-forwards,” Berwick notes.

What Makes a Great Housewife?

Not just anyone can hold a diamond or a peach. “They have to be authentic and vulnerable and really be prepared to share their whole lives with people,” Berwick says. “If they don’t feel that authenticity… the fans will be quite vocal about it.”

Early footage is often scrapped to weed out camera chasers. “Usually when we start taping a show, we throw away the first few days anyway, because you can then weed out anyone who’s playing for the camera.”

There’s also the “season 2 glow-up” effect, as Andy Cohen recently noted. “They’ll get Botox after seeing themselves on screen,” Berwick laughs.

Controversy, Crime, and the Line You Don’t Cross

From tax fraud to telemarketing scams, Bravo cast members have faced their share of post-show legal drama. “It really defies all logic that if you are engaged in criminal activity, you would want to go on television,” Berwick says. “That is really the furthest thing that we want. It’s always a surprise and a disappointment.”

But not all controversy is a deal-breaker. “There’s lots of gray area,” she explains. “If we’ve got a whole cast who won’t film with somebody… then you can’t bring them back. I will say people redeem themselves.”

“We put people on television who are flawed, as we all are. But those flaws aren’t criminal. We want to give people a bit of grace.”

In a dramatic legal showdown that spanned nearly 10 hours, Real Housewives of Atlanta star Porsha Williams walked away victorious—and with a lot more than just peace of mind.

“She won,” a host declared on The Breakfast Club. “A judge ruled to enforce her prenup with her ex, Simon Guobadia. That is a huge deal.”

According to court details revealed by a source close to the proceedings, Guobadia has been ordered to pay Porsha $40,000 in monthly alimony for the next 14 to 15 months. On top of that, she retains ownership of the luxury Rolls-Royce he gifted her during their short-lived marriage.

The court also ruled in Porsha’s favor regarding legal costs—Guobadia will cover all of her attorney fees.

The couple’s $7 million marital home remains a shared asset—for now. While Simon retains 50% equity due to it being his premarital property, Porsha has until 2027 to decide whether she wants to refinance and buy him out. In the meantime, he’s on the hook for mortgage payments and related expenses.

“Simon walked away pissed,” the insider revealed, noting that there were no direct interactions between the former couple throughout the marathon Zoom hearing on June 11. The session ran from 9:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

And it may not be over just yet. “Simon is exploring the options of an appeal,” the host added. “He has 30 days to file with the court.”

This divorce saga comes amid Simon’s reported deportation back to Nigeria, casting even more intrigue over the legal dispute. With RHOA season 16 airing Sundays at 8/7c on Bravo, fans are likely to get a front-row seat to the fallout.

Lisa Hochstein Reconciles With Ex-Mother-in-Law Marina After Divorce Drama

In a twist no one saw coming, Real Housewives of Miami star Lisa Hochstein has mended fences with her former mother-in-law, Marina Hochstein—proof that even reality TV’s most strained relationships can find their way back to peace.

The reconciliation came after a family gathering that could have gone very differently: a joint birthday party for Lisa’s two children—Logan, nearly 10, and Elle, who recently turned 5—hosted at the Star Island mansion Lisa once shared with her ex-husband, Dr. Lenny Hochstein.

“I’m so happy about it,” Lisa told Page Six at the Season 7 premiere party Tuesday night, visibly emotional about the turn of events.

Lisa shared that the decision to host the party at Lenny’s house came after a heartfelt request from their children. “And I said, ‘OK, you know what? I’m gonna put on my big-girl panties, and we’re gonna do this,’” she recalled. Lenny agreed to the plan, and despite their complicated history, the event went smoothly. “We did it, and it was great. It actually turned out wonderful. He was on his best behavior.”

But the most surprising moment of the day came not from Lisa and Lenny—it came from Lisa and Marina.

“Marina and I actually made up, and that was the best thing for me, at least, and I think for the kids and our future,” Lisa revealed. She described an emotional reunion: “We saw each other and had a moment … there were tears.”

When asked who initiated the long-awaited conversation, Lisa said it was mutual. “We both wanted it,” she explained. Hinting that old tensions may have finally resolved, Lisa added, “It took her a little longer to see,” and noted that someone’s “mask came off”—a veiled reference that RHOM fans will surely speculate about.

Lenny himself told Page Six he was pleased by the reunion, describing previous interactions among the three as marked by “a lot of tension.” He said that within just 30 minutes of the party, Lisa and Marina had made peace.

Lisa was quick to clarify, however, that her co-parenting relationship with Lenny remains distant. “We don’t really talk,” she said. Even at the party, “we kinda said a few words and smiled and took photos with the kids, but that was it.” Still, she emphasized the focus was exactly where it needed to be: “We wanted to have a flawless, beautiful, happy day for the kids, and that’s what we did.”

As for Marina, who has had her share of public criticism toward Lisa in the past, she admitted that period was “a turbulent time.” But seeing Lisa again at the party changed everything. “It’s good to see you,” she said, recalling how she broke the ice.

“For my grandkids, it’s very important that they will have a family because we have to be friends,” Marina added. “I hope my son and Lisa also will be friends again.”

Lisa Hochstein Sets the Record Straight on Jody’s ‘Shady’ AC Break in RHOM Premiere

The Real Housewives of Miami Season 7 premiere dropped some serious drama — and no, it wasn’t just the usual glamorous parties and high-stakes friendships. This time, the spotlight shifted to Lisa Hochstein’s boyfriend, Jody, and a suspicious moment caught by production that left fans buzzing.

Here’s what went down:

During Jody’s birthday party, viewers saw a scene that had tongues wagging. Jody and a friend stepped away from the party, heading into his bedroom to grab a shot and, supposedly, to get some relief from the Florida heat with the air conditioning. Cameras captured them going into the room, locking the door, and Jody — still mic’d — casually saying, “The AC is good in here. It’s good, right?”

This seemingly innocent moment sparked rumors online, with fans speculating about what “shady” activity might have been going down behind that locked door.

Enter Lisa Hochstein. She took to X (formerly Twitter) to respond to a post pointing out how production chose to cut away from a heated argument between Lisa and Larsa to show this little snippet instead. The original post read:
“I love that production felt the need to cut away from the end of Lisa & Larsa’s friendship to show us this.”

Lisa didn’t hold back in her reply:
“Our master bedroom is huge. It has its own bar. Its own living room. We hang out in there all the time with friends. They were hot. And none of them wanted to be around that embarrassing argument on TV.”

With that, Lisa put the rumors to rest — at least from her perspective — making it clear that the shot and air conditioning break was nothing more than a practical escape from the heat, not some secretive, shady behavior.

RHOM Star Alexia Nepola Says She’d Remarry Ex Todd But Only If It’s Off-Camera

In the unpredictable world of reality TV, it’s rare to see a love story come full circle—but for Real Housewives of Miami star Alexia Nepola, the door to reconciliation may not be completely closed.

At the Season 7 premiere afterparty of RHOM, Alexia shared a surprising confession about her ex-husband Todd Nepola. Despite their divorce being finalized just three months ago, the Bravolebrity made it clear she hasn’t ruled out a second walk down the aisle—with one very specific condition.

“Only to Todd,” Alexia told Page Six emphatically. “I would only remarry Todd. Not anybody else.”

Still, if the two were to rekindle their romance, Alexia insists it would happen far from the Bravo cameras. “I would definitely not do it on TV,” she said. “I feel like that’s such a special moment between the bride and the groom… filming takes away [from] everything.”

Her hesitation stems from regret. Reflecting on their 2021 wedding in St. Barts, she admitted that broadcasting the ceremony was a misstep. “Looking back, I knew it was something he didn’t want, and he didn’t feel comfortable with,” she revealed. “I do regret it.”

That private ceremony at Eden Rock, where it was “just him and I,” was a beautiful moment for her—one she’d like to honor again. “I would definitely love to renew my vows one day with him,” she added with a laugh. “But I’m definitely not getting married to anyone else. That’s for sure!”

The couple’s divorce was finalized in March 2025, after Todd filed in April 2024 citing that the marriage was “irretrievably broken.” At the time, Alexia took to social media to share her heartbreak: “I am shocked and heartbroken that Todd has chosen to dissolve our marriage,” she wrote. “I’m praying for better times ahead.”

Despite the legal split, the two sparked reconciliation rumors just a month later when they were spotted showing PDA in Miami Beach. Their complicated relationship has been tested, in part, by Alexia’s commitment to The Real Housewives of Miami—a source of tension she’s been candid about.

While the future remains uncertain, one thing is clear: Alexia Nepola’s heart still holds a special place for Todd. Whether or not their story gets a sequel, it won’t be one scripted by reality TV.

Kim Zolciak and Kroy Biermann Evicted from Their Georgia Mansion by US Marshals

In a dramatic turn of events, reality TV star Kim Zolciak and her estranged husband, former NFL player Kroy Biermann, were forcibly removed from their Atlanta mansion by US Marshals earlier this month. The couple, once known for their lavish lifestyle, faced legal eviction after the foreclosure of their expansive estate.

According to court documents obtained by TMZ, the new owners initiated legal proceedings last December to remove Zolciak and Biermann from the property. The filing stated that the couple was holding “the premises over and beyond the term for which they rented to them.”

The owners also noted that “Biermann, 39, and Zolciak, 47, had already been served the papers for the ‘proceeding against a tenant holding over.’” Despite these efforts, the couple initially ignored the filings, prompting intervention by the US Marshals.

On April 8, four deputy marshals “ejected” the couple from their Atlanta mansion between 3:30 p.m. and 6:45 p.m., according to the court documents.

The sprawling 15,000-square-foot home, built in 2008, features a heated pool, five fireplaces, a six-car garage, an elevator, an arcade room, a movie theater, and a gym — a stark contrast to the couple’s financial struggles.

Back in February, the Bravo alum and former Atlanta Falcons star sold the mansion for $2.75 million, a significant drop from their original asking price of $5.75 million. The home had been on the market for a year and a half as the couple attempted to avoid auction amid mounting financial woes.

Purchased in 2012 for under $900,000, the couple reduced the asking price multiple times, but ultimately could not keep the property.

This eviction marks a significant shift for Zolciak and Biermann, whose public image was often tied to their luxurious lifestyle. Now, they face the reality of foreclosure and the loss of a home that once symbolized their success.

Guerdy Abraira Says She Was “Blindsided” and Disrespected by Julia Lemigova on RHOM

The heat is back in Miami as The Real Housewives of Miami returns for its seventh season—and it looks like tensions are higher than ever. At the center of the drama? Guerdy Abraira and her shifting relationship with longtime friend and co-star Julia Lemigova.

After bravely sharing her battle with breast cancer last season, Guerdy is coming into the new season with a renewed sense of strength—and less tolerance for disrespect. Speaking with PRIDE, she didn’t hold back about where things stand with Julia now.

“Blindsided is not even the word! I didn’t see it coming,” Guerdy says. “There’s one thing to be kind and there’s one thing to be disrespected.”

Their once-close friendship has clearly hit rocky ground, and fans should brace for fireworks. Guerdy hints that a dramatic confrontation—possibly involving a thrown drink—will unfold on-screen.

“At this point in time, when people cross a line, you’re just going to have to really go in,” she explains. “You’re going to see a different side of Guerdy that you’re not going to be ready for.”

Despite the tension, Guerdy insists her goal isn’t conflict—it’s resolution. She emphasizes that her approach is rooted in reaction, not instigation.

“It does get dark, but the end goal is to resolve it. I don’t want to fight! I hope they don’t want to fight, but you never see me proactively look for the drama. I’m reactive, okay?”

At the heart of the season’s conflicts, she adds, is a simple but powerful challenge: communication.

“My intent is to try to move it forward, but people are going to have to listen. Listening is at the heart of a lot of the drama.”

With emotions running high and relationships hanging in the balance, Season 7 promises to be one of RHOM‘s most intense chapters yet.

The Real Housewives of Miami premieres Wednesday on Bravo.

Guerdy Abraira Reflects on Her Behavior on RHOM; ‘Watching Yourself Is So Cringeworthy’

Being a reality TV star might come with glamor and recognition—but for Real Housewives of Miami cast member Guerdy Abraira, it’s also a mirror. And sometimes, what she sees isn’t easy to watch.

RHOM star Guerdy Abraira

“Watching yourself back could be the most cringeworthy experience of your life,” Guerdy Abraira admits to Parents. “I had moments where I was like, ‘Damn, I do sometimes sound a little harsh,’ but that’s my tonality. It may seem like I’m being confrontational when I just talk in a matter-of-fact way.”

It’s that kind of introspection that sets Abraira apart in the often volatile world of reality TV. Rather than doubling down, she leans into the discomfort—and learns from it. “I’m realizing a lot of times there’s a loss in translation and a loss in intention—I’m learning from it and accepting it.”

Her commitment to accountability extends to her relationships as well. For Abraira, the ability to admit fault is a non-negotiable when it comes to friendship. “When you’re able to say, ‘You know what? You are actually right. I’m sorry, my bad’—that’s where friendships grow,” she explains. “But the moment someone thinks they always have to be right, then the system is rigged.”

This season, viewers will see her navigating shifting alliances and emotional confrontations—but Abraira suggests that growth, not drama, is the deeper story. “As you watch this season, know that listening and being open are very important for evolution to happen. You’ll see that being at the center of a lot of dynamic changes.”

Beyond the friendships and feuds, Abraira carries a powerful sense of responsibility—especially as a mother. With some scenes turning physical this season, she’s mindful of the message it sends, particularly to her two sons.

“I’m raising two biracial boys. You have to understand the kids are watching,” she says. “And there are some things that maybe some people can get away with because of whatever their privileges may be—but I have to be careful with how I act—because my kids are watching.”

It’s not just about public image—it’s about parenting with integrity. “You can’t tell them what not to do and then do it yourself [on camera]. The same grace would not be extended if our kids did that in the streets. I care about my kids and what they’re watching, and I will behave accordingly. I will always find my words.”

While Ariana Biermann is stepping into a new chapter with Next Gen NYC, she’s also confronting the lingering shadow of her past. The 23-year-old reality star recently opened up on the Casual Chaos podcast, hosted by her costar Gia Giudice, to directly address what she calls a long-standing “misconception” surrounding her 2022 arrest.

“I hate that this is all surfacing right now,” Biermann said candidly. “It’s been three years and I didn’t do it, and I was never gonna take any deal or do anything, and I denied so many of them because I was like, ‘No, I didn’t do this. I’m fighting this.’”

Back in August 2022, Biermann was arrested following a car crash. Although she was initially charged with DUI, she has consistently denied driving under the influence. “I do not [have a DUI]. It was dismissed completely,” she emphasized. “I do not have one at all.”

Court documents from May confirmed that Biermann ultimately pleaded guilty to reckless driving and possession and use of drug-related objects. As part of her sentence, she will serve 24 months of probation, pay more than $2,000 in fines, complete 40 hours of community service, and abstain from alcohol and drugs.

Explaining her decision to accept the plea deal, Biermann noted, “I was fighting this case. That was two years ago. Then they offered me this [deal] in August and I said, ‘You know what, I’ll take it.’ They got back to me in May like that.”

The timing of the case’s resolution came just days before the premiere of Next Gen NYC, a Bravo reality series that follows Biermann and friends—including Giudice, Riley Burruss, and Brooks Marks—as they navigate young adulthood in New York City. Despite the stress of legal proceedings and looming media attention, Ariana seems optimistic.

“I am literally gonna have a damn six-pack. No more wine,” she joked. Giudice chimed in with support, saying, “Honestly, the positive that me and Ariana both said about this: She’s gonna get in the sickest shape of her life.”

At the show’s premiere party at NYC’s Flyfish Club on June 2, Ariana stepped out in a sparkling corset and owned the moment. “I wanted to be like Kim Kardashian,” she laughed. A few days later, she expressed her gratitude on Instagram: “I feel beyond blessed to be in a position to do this and live my dream in New York City… can’t wait to share this chapter of my life with you.”

With her legal battle behind her and a new series ahead, Ariana Biermann is turning the page—and making it clear that she’s doing it on her own terms.

‘Emotionally Destroyed’: Erika Jayne Reacts to Tom Girardi’s Prison Sentence

The drama surrounding The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills has taken a darker turn as Erika Jayne’s former husband, once-renowned attorney Tom Girardi, has been sentenced to more than seven years in prison. The reality TV star, known for her bold persona and high-octane performances, is said to be devastated by the outcome—though she continues to distance herself from his criminal actions.

‘Emotionally Destroyed’: Erika Jayne Reacts to Tom Girardi’s Prison Sentence 86

Girardi, 86, was a legal titan in Los Angeles before his fall from grace. After years of legal proceedings, he was found guilty by a jury in August 2024 of four counts of wire fraud, having stolen millions from clients—including widows, orphans, and burn victims.

While Erika Jayne, 52, has never been criminally charged, she has found herself embroiled in the civil aftermath. The bankruptcy trustee for Girardi’s now-defunct law firm is suing her for $24 million—money they allege he transferred to her over the years. She has repeatedly denied any knowledge of wrongdoing, insisting her only involvement was as a wife unaware of the depth of Girardi’s financial deceit.

Attorney Jim Wilkes, who represents Jayne in an unrelated Florida case and was once close friends with Girardi, spoke candidly to The U.S. Sun about how the sentence has affected her.

“Erika spent many years with Tom, she is experiencing a wave of emotions,” he said.
“I’m sure she’s emotionally destroyed, but there’s a part of her that’s shut off and compartmentalized.
If someone you loved and trusted, and everyone else told you to trust, broke every bit of trust you had in them and didn’t even tell you, covered it up, how would you feel?”

Jayne filed for divorce in November 2020 after 21 years of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences. Since then, she has maintained her distance, claiming she is no longer in contact with Girardi and expressing sadness over his decline.

Girardi was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in March 2021 and placed under conservatorship that July. Despite the diagnosis, he was deemed competent to stand trial.

Wilkes believes that while Girardi may suffer from dementia, he was aware enough to understand his actions and the illegality of them.

“I don’t think Erika has a particular opinion over whether he goes to a treatment center or prison, the court makes that decision and she wasn’t a part of this process,” Wilkes said.
“He’s been charged and sentenced to prison, that’s what happens to people who do this.
Am I happy about it? No. I’m not happy to see anyone suffer.
But Tom was a prominent figure and he did some stupid stuff, he deserves to be punished for what he did.”

He didn’t mince words about the severity of Girardi’s crimes or the consequences:

“It looks like he did a lot for a long time. He lost everything.
You have to deal with the consequences, the system is not perfect but I’m sure he’ll be in minimum security as he’s no threat, but prison is still prison. You can’t get up and go to the refrigerator.
If he’s aware of being punished for something he shouldn’t do, then that’s what prison is for.”

While Jayne and Girardi never had children together, she has a son from a previous relationship, and he has adult children from earlier marriages. The public unraveling of Girardi’s life has been especially poignant for Jayne, who reflected on his decline in health during a RHOBH “After Show” segment, calling it “very sad.”

As the legal fallout continues, Erika Jayne remains a polarizing figure—defending herself publicly while trying to rebuild both her personal and professional life in the shadow of one of the most notorious legal scandals in recent memory.
