Kim Zolciak and Kroy Biermann must follow strict visitation rules if they want to visit their 15-year-old son, KJ Biermann, while he remains at Atlanta’s Metro Regional Youth Detention Center.

KJ is currently awaiting a court hearing following his arrest on serious charges, including aggravated sodomy and aggravated sexual battery. He was officially indicted Thursday on seven counts, including aggravated child molestation, aggravated sodomy, aggravated sexual battery, three counts of aggravated sexual battery against a child under 16, and false imprisonment.

The charges stem from alleged acts involving a victim under the age of 16 on April 23.

According to the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice, who spoke with Page Six, youth detainees are guaranteed at least two visits per week, with each visit lasting a minimum of one hour. One of those visits must take place on a Saturday or Sunday.

The visitation policy allows “reasonable visitation” with biological and adoptive parents, legal guardians, foster parents, children of the detained youth, kinship caregivers, grandparents, godparents, mentors, teachers, clergy and others who support the youth.

KJ is allowed up to five visitors at a time. Video visitation is also available if family members are unable to visit the facility in person.

Because KJ is facing charges involving sexually harmful behavior, the state’s policy includes additional restrictions. A Juvenile Detention Counselor must make sure that an alleged victim is not included on the approved visitation list unless a court order allows it or the Department of Juvenile Justice’s victim advocate grants special approval.

Visits can also be temporarily limited or canceled due to security concerns, disturbances or emergency situations.

Once approved, visitors still have to clear security before seeing a youth detainee. Everyone entering the facility must pass through a metal detector and may be subject to additional searches, including a pat-down or hand-held detector check.

Kim and Kroy also have to follow a strict dress code.

Visitors are banned from wearing thin straps, tube tops, tank tops, halter tops, sheer or transparent fabrics, bare midriffs, and any shorts, skirts or ripped pants that sit above the knee.

Personal belongings are searched before visitors enter the visitation area. Strollers, baby carriers, baby slings and diaper bags are not allowed. Outside food and drinks are also banned unless approved by the facility director.

Families may bring up to $20 in quarters for vending machines, but the money must be kept in a clear plastic bag. Any snacks purchased must be eaten before the visit ends.

KJ is also subject to security protocols. The policy requires youth detainees to be frisk-searched before entering the visitation area and strip-searched after each visit ends.

Page Six previously reported details about KJ’s day-to-day life inside the facility. Glenn Allen, director of communications for the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice, said youth detainees follow a structured daily schedule.

“Youth at our detention centers follow a daily schedule that provides structure, accountability, education and chances for positive growth,” Allen said.

He added, “While schedules may vary by facility, programming needs, and security, each day is arranged to maintain a safe, structured environment that supports education and rehabilitation.”

According to Allen, a typical day begins with morning hygiene, cleaning rooms, breakfast and mandatory educational lessons. After lunch, youth detainees continue with classroom instruction before participating in recreation, dinner and counseling sessions focused on treatment, life skills, behavior and personal development.

Youth detainees may also participate in worship services, mentoring, music, creative arts, life-skills sessions and group counseling.

Earlier this week, KJ requested to be released, citing his character, academics and football background.

His attorney argued in court papers, “He is a high school student in good standing who has demonstrated strong academic achievement and regularly participates in extracurricular and community-based activities. He is an accomplished football player who has received scholarship offers based upon his athletic ability.”

KJ’s legal team has previously denied the allegations against him.

Kim has also defended her son publicly, calling the allegations “reckless and deeply troubling” through a representative and stating that KJ “categorically denies” the claims.

Because KJ is a minor and the case involves serious criminal allegations, the matter will now continue through the court system.

For now, Kim and Kroy can visit their son, but only under the strict rules and security procedures set by the youth detention center.
