Andy Cohen is under fire!
A former Real Housewives of Potomac producer is coming to Candiace Dillard Bassett’s defense after Andy Cohen appeared to suggest that her departure from the Bravo franchise was not entirely her decision.
Patrick McDonald, who says he worked on Candiace’s final two seasons of RHOP, took to social media to challenge the narrative surrounding her 2024 exit, claiming that Candiace had seriously considered leaving the show long before her departure was announced.
And Patrick didn’t stop there. He accused Andy of attempting to discredit Candiace and questioned how the network has treated women who have publicly criticized Bravo.
The controversy began after comments from Andy fueled renewed speculation that Candiace had actually been fired from RHOP, despite previously telling fans she had chosen to step away.
Patrick responded directly in the comments section of a social media post discussing Andy’s remarks.
“Hi. Former RHOP producer here that worked on Candiace’s final 2 seasons,” Patrick began, before questioning why Andy would suggest that Candiace’s exit was entirely Bravo’s decision.
According to Patrick, he personally witnessed Candiace struggling with whether she wanted to remain on the show during her final season.
He recalled a cast trip to the Dominican Republic, where he claimed the two stayed up talking until 5 a.m. while she considered the advantages and disadvantages of returning.
Patrick said the conversation left little doubt in his mind that Candiace was genuinely considering walking away.
“She was very much considering leaving the show during that final season,” he explained.
The former producer also claimed that Candiace eventually decided continuing with RHOP wasn’t worth the impact it was having on her and her family.
He argued that even if Bravo had decided not to bring her back, her departure should not be portrayed as a straightforward firing because she had already been contemplating leaving.
Patrick then turned his criticism directly toward Andy.
“So this is just another example of Andy Cohen re-writing the narrative after the fact,” he alleged.
He accused Andy of attempting to damage the reputation of another woman of color, claiming that Bravo personalities who speak out against the network’s culture are sometimes publicly discredited.
Patrick did not provide evidence that Andy’s comments were intended to damage Candiace’s reputation, and his allegations reflect his personal interpretation of the situation.
However, his account adds another perspective to a debate that has followed Candiace since her departure.
Candiace officially announced in March 2024 that she would not return to RHOP after six seasons.
At the time, she framed the decision as a personal choice, explaining that she wanted to focus on new opportunities, her music career and other responsibilities.
“With a whirlwind of new opportunities and responsibilities on my plate, I have decided to take a break from RHOP,” Candiace said in her original statement.
She also left the possibility of returning open, telling fans that her departure was not necessarily permanent.
Her announcement came following an especially difficult eighth season, during which her relationships with several cast members, including Gizelle Bryant and Robyn Dixon, had deteriorated significantly.
Candiace had spent much of her final seasons defending her husband, Chris Bassett, after Gizelle claimed he had made her uncomfortable during a private interaction.
Chris denied any inappropriate behavior, and Candiace repeatedly accused her castmates of attempting to damage his reputation.
The fallout contributed to deep divisions within the cast, and the Season 8 reunion ended without several major conflicts being resolved.
Candiace has since become more outspoken about why the experience was no longer healthy for her.
During a July 2026 interview on the Pop Syllabus podcast, she revealed that her frustrations extended beyond the women she was filming with.
“I started to feel like I’m fighting with the girls, but now I’m also fighting with production,” Candiace explained.
She said she had reached a point where she no longer felt supported by the people responsible for making the show.
The reality star also reflected on the emotional impact of watching Chris defend himself against allegations that she believed were unfair.
For Candiace, the combination of cast conflict, production concerns and her desire to start a family ultimately made returning increasingly difficult.
Patrick’s latest comments are not the first time he has defended Candiace publicly.
During a September 2026 appearance on the Bravo! We’re Black podcast, Patrick described Candiace as one of the Bravo personalities he felt was most misunderstood by viewers.
He praised her kindness behind the scenes and recalled developing a close relationship with her during filming.
His recent response also follows months of renewed speculation about the circumstances surrounding Candiace’s departure.
During The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip: Roaring 20th, Gizelle Bryant reportedly referred to Candiace as having been fired from RHOP.
That comment immediately raised questions among viewers because it contradicted Candiace’s original explanation that she had chosen to take a break.
At the time of Candiace’s departure in 2024, Andy himself spoke positively about her contributions to Potomac and expressed hope that viewers would eventually see her return.
He praised her music career and acknowledged the significant impact she had made during her six seasons.
Those comments are now being revisited as fans question why the circumstances of her exit are being characterized differently.
Meanwhile, Candiace has continued expanding her career outside RHOP.
She and Chris welcomed their son, Jett Maxwell Lee Bassett, in October 2024, and Candiace has continued pursuing music, acting and other television opportunities.
She also appeared on Peacock’s The Traitors Season 4 and later reunited with several familiar Bravo faces on Ultimate Girls Trip.
In January 2026, Candiace addressed whether she would ever consider returning to RHOP.
“I do not have any plans to return to Potomac at this time,” she said on her Undomesticated podcast.
Although she wasn’t willing to rule out a return forever, Candiace made it clear that she was not actively discussing a comeback.
Now, Patrick’s public defense is reigniting the debate over who ultimately made the decision to end Candiace’s time on the show.
His account suggests that she had already been seriously questioning her future with RHOP before any final casting decisions were made.
However, the exact circumstances of her departure remain disputed, and neither Patrick’s account nor the recent speculation definitively establishes whether Bravo declined to renew her contract, Candiace chose not to return, or both sides independently arrived at the same decision.
