Luann de Lesseps Says RHONY “Changed My Life Completely” Adding “Even Michelle Obama Knows the Drama”

Luann de Lesseps is looking back on her Real Housewives of New York City journey — and just how much it transformed her life.

The longtime Bravo star reflected on her experience to TV week as the franchise celebrates 20 years, admitting the show had a lasting impact on both her personal life and career.

“Housewives has changed my life completely,” Luann said.

Over the years, Luann has gone from countess to cabaret star, all while navigating relationships, divorce, and personal ups and downs in front of millions of viewers.

“It was not easy, particularly when the women had fights, and really unpleasant ones,” she admitted.

Still, she says the experience came with unforgettable moments.

“But I got to sing with Natalie Cole on the show. I got to travel with the girls doing cast trips. That was fun.”

As Bravo prepares to celebrate the franchise’s 20th anniversary with The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls’ Trip: Roaring 20th, Luann teased that fans can expect classic Housewives energy.

“This OG trip is just fantastic,” she said. “There were tears. There was drama. There’s joy. There are surprises.”

According to Luann, the franchise’s impact goes far beyond reality TV — even reaching the highest levels of pop culture.

“Even Michelle Obama knows everything about the Housewives,” she said.

Luann recalled a moment that highlighted just how widely known the show has become.

“She was talking about Teresa going to jail. That and her table flipping scene were history-making.”

Looking back, Luann says the original Housewives still hold a special place with fans, even after cast changes and reboots.

Now, that nostalgia is being tapped into again with the upcoming E! series The Golden Life, which will feature returning OG stars.

“The flavour is always there – it’s always been there,” Luann said.

“You can’t change the taste of coffee. I mean, you can – but it’s not going to be as good!”

After two decades, Luann’s message is clear: Housewives didn’t just change her life — it became part of pop culture history.

It is part of pop cult history. Maybe E! will pick up Jersey and Miami too.

Miami's ratings were beyond bad, so it's doubtful anyone would want them, and there's still some life in NJ.

Well, I liked Miami. I liked Dubai, Jersey, New York and Dallas. I even liked Washington. Oh, and Toronto. Oh well.

I liked Melbourne and Auckland. Bravo an most of their seasons and then just suddenly yanked it just when they were getting juicy.

Auckland was a trip indeed. Angela Stone was so funny, "My name maybe Stone, but everything I touch turns to Gold". Although I thought Sidney was crazy. Athena X was particularly vicious on Season 1. If I am correct, Seasons 2 and beyond were new cast except for Chrissy. have you seen Sidney?

No haven't seen Sydney. On Auckland, I liked the older woman, Ann something or other. If memory serves she was like an LVP, but with cats. Melbourne was excellent; not a dud in the bunch. I see Mel and Vancouver are streaming on Peacock, so I'm definitely going to check it out. The good ol' days before it all went to sh' right?

Ann was fabulous, elegant and very nice. Was surprised the turn of drama with Julia and Michelle(and the very unacceptable derogatory name used against Michelle(beautiful wife, mother & model!)). I thought Louise looked like Angelina Jolie's sister. I'll never forget Angela though, she was in her own LaLaLand. Sad there was no Season 2. Gina is...just LUV her! She is Savage and on point. Love Melbourne but they need Gina(red that last season was not successful). Vancouver made me sad the way Mary Zilba was "bullied" esp by Jody. Seemed like Mary couldn't trust or rely on anyone, esp her BFF Ronnie Negus. After Vancouver ended though, Ronnie's story was very very sad as she lost her son Houston and her daughter almost choked to death as she was also dealing with alcoholism...nothing but Love for Ronnie. I'm going on and on here. I probably shouldn't mention Lagos, Joburg and Durban Housewives.

Wow, and I thought I knew all about the HW's ... you're the Real Housewives extraordinaire! Bryan Moylan (The Housewives: The Real Story Behind the Real Housewives) has nothing on you.

Thank you for your kind words. I'm just a "regurgitator" of these fun and escapist shows(well, the older seasons before they got so so scripted & so so nasty). Used to watch Robin Leachs' Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous back in the 80s. When Housewives arrived, the "storylines" felt familiar, ie, the challenges of navigating family, career and fortunes.

Yep, it's now all so fake and producer-driven scripted. I know people with serious money (including family members) and no lives, let alone acts like these loons. In my mind, the only hope for the series is to get back to the basics, meaning REAL people with REAL connections ... the way OC and NJ started out.

Speaking of Mooshell, I'm remembering when I first started watching 15 yrs. ago (way back on season 4) and ingenuously asking if Luann was a trans woman. Not knowing anything about the show yet, I honestly thought she was. Good times.
