Monyetta Shaw-Carter, known to many for her appearances on The Real Housewives of Atlanta, is sharing her deeply personal journey with breast cancer in hopes of inspiring others to prioritize their health.

The 45-year-old mother of two revealed in a candid interview with People that she was diagnosed with stage 1 invasive ductal carcinoma in late 2024. What began as an unusual feeling in her chest turned out to be something far more serious. “I was doing a self-check because I felt this random sensation that I can’t really describe in my left boob,” Shaw-Carter said. “It was like nothing I’ve ever felt before. It was literally like my body was alerting me that something was wrong.”

Shaw-Carter’s instincts proved right. Following further testing, doctors confirmed the diagnosis and quickly created a treatment plan. In January, she underwent a lumpectomy, a surgery that removed the tumor and surrounding tissue. Fortunately, her medical team was able to get clean margins, and chemotherapy was not required.
She completed 16 rounds of radiation and finished treatment in early May. Shaw-Carter expressed gratitude for early detection and credited it with saving her life. “Because I caught the cancer early, I will be here for my kids,” she said. “There’s nothing more important than getting checked often and early to protect your future. Our health is irreplaceable.”
The RHOA alum, who shares two children with ex-partner NE-YO and married Heath Carter in 2021, posted the news to Instagram, where an outpouring of support followed from fans and fellow cast members alike.
Monyetta Shaw-Carter appeared as a friend-of on Seasons 14 and 15 and a guest on Season 16.
