The Real Housewives of Potomac world was hit with breaking news this week as Dr. Wendy Osefo and her husband, Edward “Eddie” Osefo, were arrested in Maryland on multiple fraud charges, including seven felonies. But it wasn’t just the arrest that shocked fans, it was Candiace Dillard Bassett’s real-time reaction during a live TV appearance.
Candiace, a former RHOP cast member, was on Fox 5 DC when she learned of Wendy’s arrest just moments before going live. Her reaction was raw, emotional, and filled with concern — not just for her friend, but for what she believes is a troubling pattern.
“I was floored. I’m shaking. It’s shocking,” Candiace said. “I just heard about it right before I walked on set.”
TMZ had confirmed earlier that the Osefos were facing charges tied to a reported burglary in April 2024. The couple, who were vacationing in Jamaica at the time, claimed their Maryland home had been broken into. They later filed insurance claims for stolen items — including Wendy’s diamond anniversary ring — which investigators say was later seen on her Instagram.
Candiace didn’t focus on the case details in the interview. Instead, she questioned whether Wendy and her husband were being unfairly targeted, especially given their success as Black entrepreneurs.
“$300 and we’re arresting a mother and a father?” she asked. “Business owners, entrepreneurs… we know that the Osefos have a very successful marijuana business, they are providing jobs and opportunities for people of color in the area… so my first thought is, are they being targeted?”
She also connected the situation to another recent RHOP scandal — Karen Huger’s DUI arrest — and suggested a disturbing trend.
“One might opine that perhaps Karen was made an example of,” she said. “It just feels like someone is out to get the girls.”
Candiace became emotional when speaking about Wendy’s family.
“I know the Osefos, I know their children, I know their family, I’m heartbroken.”
And while she stopped short of making a definitive statement, she left no doubt that she was skeptical of how everything was unfolding.
“How are two women from the same show — the same show that features African American women — in the climate that we’re living in today, where people are being picked up and snatched off the street for frivolous nonsense, I would like to see everything before I make my final thoughts.”
Since that interview, Candiace hasn’t made any further public statements about the arrest. Her social media has remained quiet, and no follow-up interviews have been released. For now, that raw moment on live TV is her only public response.
Meanwhile, a rep for the Osefos told TMZ, “Dr. Wendy Osefo and her husband, Edward Osefo, are back home safely with their family and in good spirits. They are grateful for the outpouring of concern and support from friends, fans, and colleagues.”
