Kyle Richards Blames Mauricio Umansky for Their Marriage’s End: “He Didn’t Do the Work” Says Being Nice Wasn’t Enough

Kyle Richards and Mauricio Umansky's heated argument played out on RHOBH.

Kyle Richards has recently opened up about the end of her marriage to Mauricio Umansky, placing the blame squarely on his lack of effort to repair their relationship. In a candid interview, the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star revealed her feelings of disappointment and frustration, noting that despite the couple’s best efforts, Mauricio didn’t make the necessary changes to salvage their union.

In a recent interview on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills After Show, she shared candid insights into what led to the dissolution of their 25-year marriage and explained why she places much of the blame on her estranged husband’s lack of effort.

During the Feb. 25 episode, Kyle explained the crux of the problem: Mauricio’s failure to put in the necessary work to save their relationship. “I mean, clearly if you want something to work, you have to do the work. And I didn’t see that being done,” Kyle admitted. “I think Mau thought, ‘I’m always nice to you.’ And that’s that’s not doing the work; That’s being nice to me.”

Kyle Richards continued, expressing doubts about whether Mauricio truly had the desire or ability to fix things. “But doing the work? I just don’t know if he has it in him, or wants to,” she added.

Further clarifying a comment she made in a previous therapy session, Kyle explained that when she said Mauricio “didn’t fight for the marriage,” she was referring to his lack of effort to address their issues. “Not doing the work is what I mean when I say not fighting for the marriage,” Kyle said on the After Show. She elaborated that after their separation, they agreed to attend therapy separately and together. “But he just decided not to do that,” she revealed.

In another moment during the After Show, Kyle shared that, since filming for Season 14 wrapped, she and Mauricio have had conversations about the future of their separation. “I have said to him, ‘We have to have the harder conversations now. A lot of decisions are going to have to be made,'” Kyle stated, indicating that she’s ready to face the tough decisions ahead.

Kyle also addressed how difficult it has been for both of them to make their separation official, explaining the emotional complexity behind the situation. “If we hated each other it would be so easy — not really, but emotionally easy,” she said. “I think that it was just hard, and neither one of us wanted to be the one to say, ‘OK. We’re not going to be together and let’s start figuring everything out.'”

Despite this reluctance to make the split official, Kyle acknowledged that avoiding the conversation has only prolonged the inevitable. “We’ve made it easy for each other to not have to do that by just avoiding everything, actually,” she admitted.

Kyle also opened up about the pressure she faced from her RHOBH castmates, who were eager for answers about her marriage. “I think a lot of the women were pressing for answers from me before I even had the answers myself. I think they didn’t believe me, but I genuinely did not,” she said. “They were watching my marriage unfold in real time. So, I was like, ‘Guys, I don’t have the answers. Not everyone has them that fast.’”

I feel sorry for Kyle, even though I don't particularly like her. It has appeared to me for a very long time that Mo was checked out. He seemed to be just going through the motions, almost from day one on the show. She just didn't see it. He always seemed very superficial to me in their interactions.

I think he was more invested in the early days but when got his own show, he definitely didn't need Kyle any longer for fame.

Of curse Kyle is the victim here and if everyone did exactly what she thinks they should do, all would be right with the world. Unfortunately for Kyle, Mauricio was faced with a wife having an affair with another woman and flaunting it in public. Any person with any sense of dignity would do what Mauricio did -- walk away, stay close to the children and move on.

I'm happy for HIM.

Kyle always dances around the real reason for this separation. Saying that Mo is checked out or he didn't do the work...what does that mean? Kyle knows but isn't willing to say. What did he do that caused all this??? Anyway, not a Kyle fan because she really is a mean girl but I felt bad for her anyway. She is hurt. Losing your family life has to be tough. Maybe, she shouldn't have let him leave...IDK because no one knows what he did.

I feel bad for Kyle too and Dorit as well even though I don’t particularly like either of them. Divorce is heartbreaking and soul crushing. I don’t wish that on anyone just cuz they’re obnoxious, and for the most part, that’s all these broads are, obnoxious, they aren’t monsters. So, I hope they find light at the end of the tunnel whatever that looks like. ????

That's a nice comment?

Meh, imo dude checked out of the marriage a while ago, but was quite willing and able to go through the motions…until he got his taste of freedom. Yeah, when men check out of romantic relationships, the chances of them willingly AND genuinely checking back in is slim to none and Slim left town. ? I’m not saying it’ll NEVER happen. It can and it does, BUT make no mistake: those are the exceptions, not the rule. The notion that a checked out man will FIGHT for a relationship even a marriage? ? Yeah, not so much. To the vast majority of them, it’s literally checking out, as in like a hotel room. They are not going to pine over a hotel room once checked out. If they want/need to, they’ll just find another to check into. That’s pretty much the mentality. Checked out means just that. They may not hate their former hotel room, there may even be aspects of it they miss, but it’s time to move on all the same. ?

I don't know if it still holds true but when Phil Donahue was still on he did a show where I clearly remember an expert said that statistically, five years out from their divorce, more than 80 percent of divorced men said they wished they were back with their divorced wives. I guess five years out there made them realize the Brazilian's on the other side of the street weren't any better than the lawns they'd had at home - in fact they required more money and time to maintain.

It would be interesting to see if that still holds true. It wouldn’t shock me if it held true for Mau, but something tells me Kroy, for example, will DEFINITELY be among the 20%. ?As a spectator, I still hold this Kyle/Mauricio divorce is a HUGE mistake. I think they should get back together, but meh…what do I know? ????

I agree. I feel like Mo has been checked out for a very long time. He always appeared to me to be just going through the motions. Pretty much from day 1.

Kyle Loves Mau, and really all she wanted was for him to fight for her to show her how bad he wants this and he didn't he went out and got a girlfriend. I feel for Kyle, she deserved better.
HelenWheels68 February 26, 2025 - 11:46 am
But did he go out and "get a girlfriend" only after she did? We don't know.
